Best Strains to Mix

If you have been craving the perfect effect from your marijuana, you may want to try mixing your strains. Blending your weed is a highly effective way to create the perfect experience, it just takes a little experimentation.

When you blend weed, you don’t always get a little bit of one and a little bit of the other. Instead, mixing weed strains can change the flavor entirely.  The goal is to find a blend that is perfect for you.

When you mix different strains of bud, you can produce a high with very distinct effects. Especially when it is two very different strains, such as when mixing indica and sativa, you’re likely to end up with something completely new. It’s kind of like the idea behind hybrids – where breeders combine genetics to create superior strains, except you’re combining the harvested flowers.

A lot of the benefits of blending have to do with the cannabinoids; they’re the natural chemicals that we can feel. Every strain has a unique combination of these compounds. When you combine strains, it then produces an ‘entourage effect,’ where the compounds work together to create new noticeable effects.  For example, when mixing CBD and THC, the CBD changes the psychoactive effects of the THC. You’re still consuming the same amount of THC, but because you added CBD, the negative effects are reduced.

The entourage effect can also involve flavonoids and terpenoids and increase the therapeutic properties of nearly any strain. Mixing different strains of bud is one of the easiest ways to promote the entourage effect. However, you can also consume multiple parts of a single plant to achieve a more varied mix of cannabinoids. This is the idea behind ‘whole-plant’ extracts.

Creating new effects is as simple as finding two different marijuana strains to mix. If you’re looking for a little guidance on the best strains to mix for your ideal entourage effect, here are a few that I recommend:

Blue Dream and Cheese

Blue Dream is a hybrid that originates out of California and boasts a potent THC high, but not so powerful that it knocks you off your feet. It’s a great mood booster that gets you moving, which is perfect when you have an active day ahead.

Cheese is an indica dominant hybrid that is famous for its flavor and persistent potency. It has the Skunk #1 lineage, which gives it its intense aroma. Cheese is known for its relaxed, mood-lifting effect that takes your mind into a state of paradise.

Blending these two could produce an intensely mellow and relaxed yet euphoric daytime high, but the actual results depend on how you blend.  Create your perfect experience with these and other strains that you’ll find in my Dreamy Mix, which includes feminized Blue Dream, California Dream, and Skywalker OG seeds.

Granddaddy Purple and Sour Diesel

Super Sour Diesel
Sour Diesel Strain

Considered one of the best strains to mix, Granddaddy Purple and Sour Diesel, are well-known strains on their own. When these two combine, the blend is called Sour Purple. It’s a great example of what happens when people start mixing indica and sativa.

Granddaddy Purple creates a stress-reducing, clear-headed high, that for most people, produces a full-body buzz. On its own, you should prepare for a nice couch lock sensation. However, the Sour Diesel helps counteract that while adding a potent kick of grape flavor.

If you love the flavor of sativas, but wish they were a bit more relaxing, try mixing cannabis strains with indica. For the best effect, use pure indicas. Many indica strains are actually just indica dominant, but our Indica Mixpack features 100% indicas, including Granddaddy Purple, Bubba Kush, and Pure Indica.

Sour Diesel and OG Kush

OG Kush Strain

These two strains are definitely quite the opposite of each other, but in this case, it is a match made in heaven. OG Kush is an indica dominant strain that is strong and sedative. It’s a great blend for an evening of socializing with friends. Sour Diesel, on the other hand, is an active, energizing sativa.

When you mix these strains together, the effects of the strains become a bit less profound. You will need to blend the portions according to what type of experience you want. Add more of the Sour Diesel strain for a more intense, lively high, and more OG Kush for the couch-lock experience.

Low THC Anything and Amnesia Haze

When mixing weed strains, Low THC strains are perfect for beginners or those looking for a mellow daytime high. While many prefer high amounts of THC, in some, it can easily lead to anxiety and paranoia. Opting for a low THC strain such as Pennywise or Harlequin, for example, are a wise choice for low tolerance smokers.

However, if all you have are low-THC strains and you’d like to change the experience, try adding a potent Sativa dominant strain. Amnesia Haze is known for being the weed of choice when you want to begin your day beaming and full of energy. Needless to say, when you blend weed, such as Amnesia Haze with a low THC cannabis of your choice, you are in for a relaxing high.

The most potent Sativas are best grown outdoors. That’s why we include Amnesia Haze in our Outdoor Mixpack. It also includes the potent indica dominants, OG Kush and Super Skunk.

If this all seems complicated, it is not. Understanding the best strains to mix is all about knowing your ideal experience and selecting the right combination. If you are not satisfied with your choice, then play around with the ratio for different results. As long as you have a good variety of strains to choose from, you can create nearly unlimited combinations. If you are growing your own, my mixpacks are a great way to get a varied selection of strains with similar growing styles.

Mixing cannabis strains is a little bit of science and a lot of art. Do your research, experiment with different strains, and record your results – or don’t. There is something out there for just about every mood, therapeutic need, and experience that you desire. Don’t be afraid to stretch outside the box.

FAQ About Mixing Cannabis Strains

Does mixing cannabis strains produce a better high?

Many would argue that yes, the high is significantly better. There are two primary reasons for this, cannabinoids and terpenes, and the way they blend together when combined.

Is it difficult to properly mix cannabis strains?

When it comes to the difficulty of mixing and matching, that all depends on what exactly you’re trying to accomplish. If you prefer a hybrid high, but only have indica and sativa strains on hand, mixing the two in a ratio of 50:50 would be a pretty simple solution.
